AFAC Grants for Project Proposals in Cinema, Music and RTR, 2013
The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture is inviting applications for grants for projects in cinema, music and RTR (research, training and regional events). Arab individuals (for cinema applications, a non-Arab producer can apply for a grant provided that the film director is Arab) and local, regional and international institutions whose projects are related to Arab culture can apply for these grants. Projects may be implemented anywhere as long as they mainly target an Arab audience and should not be less than one month nor exceed 24 months.
Study: This open call funds projects in cinema, music and RTR (research, training and regional events).
Course Level: The grants fund a new project proposal which should not be less than one month nor exceed 24 months.
Eligibility: AFAC invites all Arab individuals working in the cultural and artistic spheres to send their project proposals regardless of age, years of experience, country of residence, ethnicity, religion or any other factor. For cinema applications, a non-Arab producer can apply for a grant provided that the film director is Arab. It is preferred that film projects have producers attached to them. The producer or the director may apply for the grant. AFAC also accepts proposals from local, regional and international institutions whose projects are related to Arab culture. These include artistic, cultural and educational institutions, centers and organizations, governmental and non-governmental, that are concerned with contemporary Arab arts and culture.
Scholarship Open for: Arab individuals (For cinema applications, a non-Arab producer can apply for a grant provided that the film director is Arab) can apply for these grants. Local, regional and international institutions whose projects are related to Arab culture are also eligible to apply.
Duration: The project’s time frame should not be less than one month nor exceed 24 months.
Value: AFAC provides grants amounting up to fifty thousand U.S. dollars each. If the grant from AFAC exceeds ten thousand dollars, but only covers part of the project’s overall budget, the grantee must raise 70% of the remaining budget in order to be awarded the grant. This rule does not apply to cinema applications, where projects are implemented in phases. In the event that the grantee is unable to procure 70% of the project budget within 90 days of receiving the grant, the latter will be canceled. In the event that the grantee does not sign the grant contract within 60 days upon receipt thereof, the grant will be canceled. No grantee will be awarded more than two deadline extensions during the grant period; such extensions should be justified and approved by AFAC.
Selection Criteria: The selection committee evaluates applications based on the following criteria and guidelines:
- Relevance: assessing the proposal’s content, significance and importance to Arab audiences. How relevant is the proposal to the mission and objectives of AFAC? Does the project address the current context, events, and issues facing the Arab region?
-Quality: assessing the grantee’s methodology in implementing the proposed project. Are the project results specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and do they meet a specific deadline? To what extent is there coherence among the identified project objectives and expected outcome and results? Is the applicant (institution or individual) capable of implementing the project, in terms of talent, experience, professional background and education?
-Innovation: assessing the contribution each proposal would make within its respective field and genre. How original is the proposal idea? How creative is the implementation methodology? Are applicants’ utilizing new tools for expression? Would the project be visible? Will relevant collaborations and networks be employed?
-Cost: assessing whether the project’s total cost corresponds to the proposed output. AFAC requests the jurors to consider the following: Is the budget reasonable and suited to the project’s stated objectives? Is the estimated expenditure on the proposed activities justified?
Apply: The mode of applying is online. Applications are only accepted through our online application available on website. All required documents and supporting files can be uploaded into the application by attachment or links, or posted via physical mail to the AFAC offices.
1- Supporting files/samples of previous work smaller than 10 MB should be uploaded directly to the application,

AFAC does not return application materials. Samples should be mailed through a major courier; it is recommended that applicants submit tracking numbers in their applications.
